The first known people at Bearsden Cross were the Romans, around 150 AD. The Antonine Wall runs adjacent to "Roman Road" and there are the excavated remains of a Roman bath house approximately 150 meters from Bearsden Cross. This bath house was part of a fort which covered approximately 2.5 acres with the Military Way running through the middle of the fort. "Roman Road" runs along the same path as this ancient street. Jessie M. King (c1875-1949) was born in the Manse of New Kilpatrick church. Her father was the minister of the Parish. In later years she became one of the artists known as The Glasgow Girls. Her delicate watercolours of fairies are a real pleasure to look upon. When she was a child the Glebe car park was a field with the Glebe burn running beside it. One can imagine her playing there and laying the foundations for her future paintings. For a more in depth biography try this excellent link and return with the Back button.
